Windsurfing

Alton Water is a great place to learn windsurfing with its beginner courses and robust beginner kit available for hire once you have got the hang of holding on a reach, tacking and coming back again!

The reservoir is an excellent venue with the prevailing cross shore winds giving ideal conditions for blasting across from the windsurfers beach launching area to the other side of the reservoir. As your skills increase you will want to buy your own kit and you can then take advantage of intermediate and advanced teaching that is available at the centre and even up to instructor level.

For the learner the seasonal water watch and readily available support cover affords great peace of mind (especially if you are a parent whose children are learning). Advanced windsurfers will also be seen sailing at Alton Water when the conditions are too challenging on the local coastal venues.

The grassy rigging area is kit friendly with little to damage sails or boards and is situated immediately in front of the parking area so there is no need to carry kit any distance!

Junior beginners

Junior windsurfing is very well catered for at Alton Water with regular beginner courses targeted at children from 8 years upwards with our experienced coaches.

Junior intermediates

Once the children have become reasonably competent (after gaining level 1 and a little practice) they can take part in Team 15, an RYA initiative www.team15.org.uk which has run at Alton Water for many years.
