Sailing Pathway for Juniors and Youths

Junior Beginners (6-11 years)

Course duration:  either 5 Morning, Afternoon or Evening Sessions

This is the first step on the sailing ladder, the Junior Beginner course has been designed to give a gentle introduction to sailing, taking your child potentially up to stage 2 standard. Each session in only roughly 3 hours in duration, meaning that your child should not become unduly tired.

Youth Beginners (11- 16 years)                                         

Cost: £158      

Pre-entry: none

Course duration: either 5 Morning or Afternoon sessions

Booking Form

An introduction to sailing aimed at slightly older children, this course uses larger boats than the Junior Beginner course and because the children are that bit older the course runs for 4.5 hours per day. The aim of the course is to get the participants comfortably sailing to a stage 2 standard.

OnBoard Club (8-16)                                                                       

Cost: £15 (inc. all hire costs)

Pre-entry:  RYA Stage 2 Standard

Alton Water Sports Centre is proud to be an RYA OnBoard partner and as part of our commitment to get young sailors regularly out on the water we offer sessions through the summer months to help get children out on the water in a cost effective manner. The sessions are open to members only (but remember Youth Membership is only £22) and will include both sailing and windsurfing.

Sessions* will be held on the following dates:

Saturdays 14:00 - 16:30          29^th May - 25^th September

Tuesday 16:30 - 19:30            20^th July - 24^th August

Junior Improver (8-11 years)                                                           

Cost: £158      

Pre-entry: RYA Stage 2 Standard

Course duration: either 5 Morning or Afternoon sessions

For those who have already complete their stage 2, and have sailed since or have sailing experience up to that standard this is the ideal course to improve skills and confidence. With no more than 6 participants the course is used to focus on the five essentials, manoeuvres and sail theory. 

Youth Improver (12-16 years)                                  

Cost: £158      

Pre-entry: RYA Stage 2 Standard

Course duration: either 5 Morning or Afternoon sessions

For those who have already complete their stage 2, and have sailed since or have sailing experience up to that standard this is the idea course to improve skills and confidence, with no more than 6 participants the course is used to focus on the five essentials, manoeuvres and sail theory. 

Youth Advanced (13-16 years)                                          

Cost: £189      

Pre-entry: RYA Stage 3 Standard                   

Course duration: 4 Days (10:00-16:00)

Designed as an introduction to double handed boats, aimed at giving the participants experience as both a helm and crew. At the end of the course the participants should be confident enough to get out and sail well in moderate conditions.

Youth Start Racing                                                                  

Cost: £164      

Pre-entry:  RYA Stage 4 standard

Course duration:  2 Days (10:00 - 17:00)

This is an introduction to racing designed to not only get you to the start line but round the course too, spending two days working on boat speed, rules and tactics you will come away with the confidence to compete in club racing and the knowledge to out fox your opponents.

Youth Seamanship                                                                 

Cost: £164      

Pre-entry:  RYA Stage 4 Standard

Course duration:  2 Days (10:00 - 17:00)

We are introducing Seamanship this year; this course is designed to work on your five essentials, boat handling and manoeuvring skills. An ideal opportunity for those looking to become instructors or those who just love to learn to gain new abilities.
