Activities at Alton Water
Sailing
Alton Water Sports Centre successfully train thousands of young people to an RYA standard each year, and during the summer months provide more RYA courses than any other centre in the East of England.
Accredited Training
Each course follows an RYA syllabus balancing theory sessions with practical teaching and activities. The courses cover all you need to know to get you started as a sailor, from basic rigging to how the sail works, from knots to racing.
These courses are ideal for beginners looking to gain knowledge and build on water confidence as well as those just looking to improve already acquired skills.
Race Training
Race training can be offered to groups of all ages and abilities. Courses consist of 3 hours of race training, held weekly, to improve general sailing and learn about the tactics and skills of racing. Working towards a regatta, be it in house, or against other schools also training at Alton Water.
Club Racing
A chance to get professional race training in a club environment. Held on the weekend this training takes place amongst real club racers, with the opportunity tojoin in and get involved.
Groups will also be given tips on team racing, rules, regulations and results.
Windsurfing
Windsurfing combines the fundamental elements of sailing with surfing and whilst often referred to as an extreme sport it can build up balance skills, environmental awareness and initiative.
It can be very rewarding with participants achieving noticeable results in a short amount of time.
Training
RYA Youth training courses are designed to break up the syllabus into bite-size chunks leaving plenty of time for on water practice.
Run in a 1:6 ratio, the courses are hands on, energetic and fun. Learning everything from rigging a sail and carrying equipment to controlling the board and understanding the wind the students are encouraged to get wet and enjoy learning through making mistakes, promoting the use of initiative.
Once students are competent windsurfers they are given the opportunity to join our Team 15 squad, which will introduce them into the social aspect of the sport and have a go at racing.
Paddle Sports and Outdoor adventure
Paddle sport sessions are popular with all ages and abilities. Paddle sports are great aerobic sports which can increase levels of physical fitness, whilst also encouraging independence, leadership and listening skills. With the focus on Outdoor Education Alton Water Sports Centre has expanded beyond the lake, to make use of the surrounding land. Activities have been specifically designed with outdoor education in mind, from basic team building to orienteering courses.
2012 will see the introduction of Orienteering and Team Building Activity Areas. Trained instructors will ensure these activities will focus on introducing initiative skills, building on leadership and communication skills and encouraging team work.
